The Worst Advice We’ve Ever Heard About Bedding

    14 Feb 2022

As a manufacturer of bedding products, we like to think we know a lot about bedding products. With 70 years of manufacturing experience, you wouldn’t believe some of the things we’ve heard. A lot of it has been good, most of it interesting, and of course, some of it extremely worrying! Considering we use our bedding 365 days a year, holidays and trips aside, we’ve heard some quite worrying advice. You’d think we’d be a bit more clued up on bedding, however, it appears some of us don’t know as much as we should do. This is the worst advice we’ve ever heard about bedding.

    Pillows Don’t Last Forever

We’ve heard stories of people not replacing their pillows for their entire lifetime. That said, the average Briton keeps a pillow for 3.2 years. Considering the average human head weighs 11 pounds, roughly the same weight as a bowling ball, can you imagine the impact that has on your pillow? Try and drop a bowling ball on your pillow 365 times, then do it a further 365 times and see how well your pillow fairs. We suggest that you invest in new pillows every 18 to 24 months.

    …And Neither Do Duvets!

If you think the stories of people not replacing their pillows for an entire lifetime are toe-curling, we’ve heard similar tales of long-lasting duvets. Although the lifetime duvets aren’t in the majority, the average Briton keeps their duvet for an average of  7.6 years, which is equally disturbing.  Duvets easily pick up debris such as skin scales dust mite faeces. In fact, research has found that duvets which have not been washed for 11 years carried over an ounce and a half of debris. If you don’t want to spend the night under filthy duvets packed with dust mites, skin scales and fungus, we should you replace your duvet once every 5 years.

    One Size Fits All

Duvets should be treated in the same manner as your wardrobe. You no doubt rotate your wardrobe to match the season, and the same should apply to your duvet. Sleeping with a 1.0 tog duvet in the harshest of winter months is the equivalent of popping to the store in a pair of swimming shorts in December. Unfortunately, through laziness or ignorance, many of us fail to rotate our duvets to match the season. When it comes to tog ratings, we’d recommend the following:

    • Summer: 4.5 Tog
    • Spring/Autumn: 9.0 – 10.5 Tog
    • Winter: 13.5 – 15 Tog

You Might Not Need a New Mattress

Finally, if you regularly suffer from a bad back, you might have started to look for a new mattress. There is almost nothing worse than a poor night’s sleep, especially when it’s the result of a hard or lumpy bed. Ensuring a good night’s sleep is essential for us to operate on a normal basis – it can affect a person’s mood, stress level, and work performance.  However, a new mattress isn’t always the answer, especially if you’re on a budget. Before you invest in a new mattress, you should try out a mattress topper. Mattress toppers offer a range of benefits for those looking for an additional layer of comfort and support from their bedding.
